In a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, May 25, 2023, local fishermen in Karwar found themselves face to face with a highly venomous sea snake, the Hydrophis schistosus. The striking black-and-white serpent, known for its captivating appearance, had inadvertently become ensnared in their fishing net. Quick to react, the fishermen carefully released the snake onto the nearby beach, where it slithered back into the ocean depths.

Despite its alluring appearance, the Hydrophis schistosus is not to be underestimated. Dr. Sivakumar Haragi, Assistant Professor at the Karwar Marine Life Science Study Center, cautioned that while these sea snakes typically avoid confrontation with humans, their bites can prove life-threatening. Although rare, encounters with these creatures have occasionally resulted in dangerous situations.
The Hydrophis schistosus is a formidable predator in the marine ecosystem, preying primarily on the young of marine catfish. However, their pursuit of prey can sometimes lead them into unintended encounters with fishing equipment, such as nets, causing them to become entangled.

This recent incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between humans and wildlife in coastal regions. While fishermen rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, it is crucial to coexist with the diverse array of marine life inhabiting these waters. Through increased awareness and responsible fishing practices, such encounters can hopefully be minimized, ensuring the safety of both humans and sea creatures alike.
